What is IATA?
IATA is the International Air Transportation Association, and they provide consolidated resources for scheduling air traffic, route management, and regulate the services provided by airlines in over 85 countries. IATA also regulates the transportation of dangerous goods training requirements for its stakeholders.
Who requires Training?
Nearly everyone working in the transportation of dangerous goods must have some level of training. From shippers, packers, freight forwarders, operators, handling agents, security screeners, and even designated postal operators must be properly trained. Workers in any of these jobs need to be trained in safe operations, regulations, and requirements of the transportation of dangerous goods by air.
What is required?
General training on the regulations you need to abide by, function-specific training to equip you with the knowledge of how to safely and effectively transport dangerous goods (TDG) by air, and safety training to inform you of the common hazards associated with TDG and the procedures on how to handle unexpected incidents.
IATA Special Requirements or Exceptions
If you are self-employed, have adequate training and experience, and are confident in your abilities, you are able to certify yourself as the owner and employee of an organization under IATA regulation. Your certificate, description of experience, and other training certifications must meet all regulatory requirements by IATA, and must be kept directly available for any inspector that may ask for them at any time.
Members of flight crews from outside of Canada or the United States, that are from member states of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) are able to use their certifications under IATA regulation. These certifications and training documents must be present if asked for by an inspector, and must be kept up to date and valid by the issuing country.
How long is TDG by Air (IATA) training good for?
TDG by Air training will need to be renewed every 24 months.
